چکیده

We have determined an upper limit to the kinetic temperature of the gas in the circumstellar envelopes of 2 Be stars, a hot star Cas, and a cooler star 1 Del, by including in an approximate manner the diiuse radiation produced in the envelope. We computed the temperature as a function of position by balancing at each position the rates of energy gain and energy loss. Photoionization, collisional de-excitation of bound levels and free-free absorption were assumed to contribute to the rate of energy gain; radiative recombination, collisional excitation and free-free emission contribute to the rate of energy loss. The kinetic temperature at a particular location is obtained from the requirement that the rates of energy gain and energy loss there are equal. These results, combined with previous investigations, establish the range of temperatures expected in the circumstellar envelopes of Be stars if the primary source of energy input is the radiation eld of the star.

Rates of Energy Gain and Loss in the Circumstellar Envelopes of Be Stars: 1 Delphini

We have investigated the rates of energy gain and loss in the circum-stellar envelope of the cool B8-9e star, 1 Delphini , using the Poeckert-Marlborough model. We determined iteratively the kinetic temperature of the gas as a function of position in the circumstellar envelope by adjusting the temperature at each grid point until the rates of energy gain and loss there were equal. The gas was a...

Rates of Energy Gain and Loss in the Circumstellar Envelopes of BeStars : the Disk

We have investigated the kinetic temperatures assumed by Waters et al. (1987) for the circumstellar envelopes of a group of Be stars. Waters (1986) introduced a simple equatorial disk model with (r) / r ?n to describe the physical characteristics of Be star disks. Since this equatorial disk model was applied to a large number of stars, it is important to ensure that the kinetic temperatures ass...

Circumstellar molecular line emission from S-type AGB stars: Mass-loss rates and SiO abundances

Aims. The main aim is to derive reliable mass-loss rates and circumstellar SiO abundances for a sample of 40 S-type AGB stars based on new multi-transitional CO and SiO radio line observations. In addition, the results are compared to previous results for M-type AGB stars and carbon stars to look for trends with chemical type. Methods. The circumstellar envelopes are assumed to be spherically s...

Imaging the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars ⋆

Aims. We report the results of an exploratory program to image the extended circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in dust-scattered galactic light. The goal is to characterize the morphology of the envelopes as a probe of the mass-loss process. Methods. The observations consist of short exposures with the VLT and longer exposures with 1–2 m telescopes, augmented with ar...

SiO in C-rich circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars: effects of non-LTE chemistry and grain adsorption

New SiO multi-transition millimetre line observations of a sample of carbon stars, including J = 8→7 observations with the APEX telescope, are used to probe the role of non-equilibrium chemistry and the influence of grains in circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. A detailed radiative transfer modelling, including the effect of dust emission in the excitation analysis, of the observed SiO lin...
